KastKing vs. Piscifun (Which Budget Brand Is Better?)

KastKing vs. Piscifun (Which Budget Brand Is Better?)

KastKing and Piscifun are two relatively new but steadily growing fishing brands.

While many anglers still consider them to be mere budget brands, they have actually started to make their way into mainstream fishing, producing more advanced and ever more popular reels and rods.

As I’ve seen plenty of KastKing vs. Piscifun debates and questions in various forums and Facebook groups, I decided to cover this topic with an in-depth article!

KastKing and Piscifun produce fishing gear of similar quality and cost, making a direct comparison fairly difficult. However, KastKing has a broader product and price range, which could tip the balance in their favor.

Read on to find out more about these two ambitious newcomer fishing brands and some of their finest pieces of gear.

KastKing or Piscifun: Which Brand Makes the Better Reels?

I have decided to focus on a wide range of factors to be able to compare these two fishing gear brands better.

This way, it’s much easier for you to identify similarities and differences, which, in turn, can help you make an informed decision.

Let’s dive right in, shall we?

Price Range

Reels

While both KastKing’s and Piscifun’s lower-tier spinning and baitcasting reels sell at roughly the same prices (spinning reels start at about $20 to $30, and baitcasters at approximately $40), overall, Piscifun sells the cheaper fishing reels.

Piscifun’s priciest spinning reel sells at around $75, and their most expensive baitcaster costs about $100.

KastKing’s most expensive spinning reel is selling at approximately $140, and their priciest baitcasters sell at about $200 to $300.

However, their most popular mid-range reels sell roughly the same price!

For spinning reels, that range is between $30 and $70. For the baitcasters, the price is between $50 and $100.

Rods

Piscifun’s and KastKing’s mid-range spinning and baitcasting rods are also priced relatively similarly, ranging from approximately $40 to $70.

As KastKing has a wider rod range, naturally, they also sell higher-tier models that range from $100 to $200.

Material Quality

Together with the price factor, the quality of the fishing gear is the most crucial factor for most anglers.

Generally speaking, both Piscifun and KastKing reels and rods are of decent quality for the money you pay for them! They have good performance, durability, and a modern design.

This statement is based on my experience fishing with both Piscifun and KastKing reels and the hundreds of reviews and forum threads I’ve plowed through for this article.

Budget and entry-level fishing gear have come a long way over the past 20 years. And that’s good news for beginners and anglers with a limited budget!

If I had to pick a winner here, I’d go with KastKing, but it’s a close one!

The thing is, both Piscifun and KastKing gear is made in China. They use roughly the same components and maybe even get their parts from the same shops and industries.

That explains the similar mid-range prices they can offer!

However, KastKing does have higher-end reels and rods, which would suggest that they are using better and more expensive components for that type of gear.

For their mid-range stuff, which is the most popular among anglers, I would say that the quality is pretty much the same!

Product Range

Reels

Both brands offer a broad range of modern fishing reels, most of which are spinning or baitcasting reels.

KastKing has more spinning reel and baitcaster series than Piscifun offers, but both companies update and enlarge their reel arsenal continuously, releasing new or upgraded reel models every year.

Piscifun, on the other hand, also offers a wide range of both fly and ice fishing reels, which KastKing does not.

Rods

The two brands have also entered the rod market and manufacture decent spinning and casting rods.

KastKing rods, especially, are enjoying an ever-growing popularity among anglers in North America. They also offer way more casting and spinning rods than Piscifun does.

What both companies need, though, are ice rods (even though KastKing currently offers one model) and fly rods. Regarding Piscifun, that’s a little odd, as they offer so many cie and fly reels.

Those markets are big, and it would be great if they’d also offer ice and fly rod and reel combos soon.

Tackle

KastKing clearly wins this category, as they offer a wide range of fishing tackle. Piscifun, on the other hand, doesn’t manufacture any tackle at this point.

Among others, KastKing sells its own lures, softbaits, hooks, jigheads, and fishing lines.

Their fishing lines (they sell both braid, mono, fluorocarbon, and fly lines) are of very decent quality and sell at an affordable price.

Their mono and fluoro lines are immensely popular and used by thousands and thousands of anglers all over the US.

Tools, Bags, and Apparel

Both Piscifun and KastKing also sell a variety of fishing tools, bags, and apparel.

These include:

  • Pliers
  • Scissors
  • Knives
  • Tackle boxes
  • Tackle bags
  • Line spoolers
  • scales
  • Waders
  • Jackets and Rainwear
  • Gloves
  • Hats

Reputation

Yes, budget reels and rods have improved over the years! But brands like KastKing and Piscifun still have a bad reputation if you ask around.

Partly, that’s because of their relatively young age. Both brands are now more or less ten years old. But compared to ancient giants like Daiwa or Shimano, Piscifun and KastKing still have their diapers on!

At least, that’s what many anglers think when they hear these brand names, I guess.

Another factor could be our modern, consumer-programmed belief that cheap means bad quality.

If it’s cheap and made in China, it can’t be good, right? Well, things have changed over the years, and while budget gear still means cheap (that’s the whole point), it doesn’t always mean bad quality!

KastKing and Piscifun are living proof of that. And I think the fact that more and more anglers use and think highly of them shows that the tide is slowly turning.

Warranty

KastKing and Piscifun products are supplied with a manufacturer’s 1-year warranty from the date of original retail purchase against defects in workmanship or materials.

Customer Service

According to online customer reviews, both KastKing and Piscifun appear to have excellent customer service.

They’re easily reached via phone or email, answer promptly and kindly, and always seem to solve the issue at hand.

More than anything else, this shows that both companies are committed, professional, and take their customers seriously, which is super important nowadays.

I can add that the communications I’ve had with their products and sales teams have been super nice, positive, and constructive as well.

They really know their game and the market they serve!

Brand Name

This is more of a bonus category, but I’ve heard from several anglers that they prefer buying KastKing gear because the brand name sounds so cool. No joke!

It’s not a criterion you should base your purchase decisions on, but for what it’s worth, the name KastKing is a cool one for a fishing manufacturer. No doubt about it!

It’s a name that strongly relates to fishing, and that’s easily remembered, and from a marketing perspective, it’s also an excellent name pick!

So there you have it; everything I could think of when discussing Piscifun vs. Kastking. I think it’s fair to say that it’s a very tight race, and it’s certainly not easy to pick a clear winner here, is it?

KastKing does have a broader range of gear and prices, which makes them a more versatile fishing brand, I guess, but both brands manage to produce decent fishing gear and enjoy growing popularity.

In the end, the choice is yours! Try out different brands and see which one fits your fishing style and needs the best. That’s usually the best way to find your gear.

I also wanted to cover some of Piscifun’s and KastKing’s very best baitcasting and spinning reels, to make it easier for you to compare these two brands.

So let’s take a closer look at some of their finest gear!

What Is the Best Piscifun Baitcaster?

a US bass angler fishing with the Piscifun Alijoz 300 baitcaster

One of Piscifun’s baitcasters is more popular than all the others, and that’s the Piscifun Alijoz 300

This is a very well-performing budget reel that sells for about $100.

The Alijoz is pretty heavy artillery gear that’s built for big freshwater game fish like northern pike and musky.

Sure, it’s not in the same league as Daiwa’s or Abu Garcia’s heavy hitters, but it has made itself known to be a solid big game baitcaster!

What Is the Best KastKing Baitcaster?

Surprisingly, KastKing’s very best baitcaster isn’t one of their most expensive reel models!

The KastKing MegaJaws Baitcaster sells for less than $100. For the quality, that price makes the reel one of the best-priced baitcasters on the market.

A very smooth and super long-casting reel with a ton of power! KastKing has put some of its best technology and components into this one!

And how about that jaws-design? That’s a really cool idea if you ask me!

Perfect for bass, walleye, and medium-sized pike or lakers.

DID YOU KNOW: This baitcaster is champion-approved by MLF-Pro Rob Branagh. The MegaJaws helped Rob win the MLF 2022 opening event at Lake Okeechobee.

What Is the Best Piscifun Spinning Reel?

According to most anglers who fish with Piscifun gear, the Piscifun Carbon X is, by far, their finest spinning reel.

This reel has an impressive 4.6-star rating on Amazon, which is really good for a budget brand if you ask me!

It sells for approximately $70, and price and quality-wise, the Carbon X can definitely be compared to most mid-range fishing reels made by more established brands.

It’s super lightweight and has a powerful drag, making it a good pick for bass, walleye, trout, and pike.

For the money, it can easily be considered to be one of the best entry-level spinning reels on the market.

What Is the Best KastKing Spinning Reel?

an image of a brand new kastking megatron spinning reel

Most anglers who use KastKing reels agree that the KastKing Megatron is the finest spinning reel in their arsenal.

If you check the Amazon reviews for this reel model, you’ll quickly understand why; the Megatron has over 3.5k 4.5-star ratings, and the number of anglers fishing with this reel is growing daily.

Selling at about 60 bucks, it’s actually a little cheaper than Piscifun’s best spinning reel model, and considering that the quality is pretty much the same, you’ll get even more reel for your money here!

The Megatron has lots of power (30lb drag), an insanely smooth performance, and a very interesting design (at least that’s what I think).

It’s certainly worth a closer look if you’re searching for a spinning reel for larger freshwater predators.

What Is Piscifun’s Newest Baitcasting Reel?

One of Piscifun’s newest additions is the Carbon XCS baitcaster

This well-designed low-profile baitcasting reel is unbelievably light (weighs in at a mere 5.5 ounces).

A perfect pick for both largemouths, smallmouths, and walleyes!

Excellent casting performance, great action, and an innovative design make this reel a great pick for both beginners and pros.

It’s also one of the most affordable baitcasters I’ve seen so far, as it sells at around $60, which is incredibly cheap. You get a ton of reel for that money!

What Is KastKing’s Newest Baitcasting Reel?

The Royale Megatron 200 is one of KastKing’s most recent baitcaster additions.

This is a powerful big fish reel that sells at a very affordable price.

I use this baitcaster for my big river pike, and it performs really well! It’s also a great pick for other big predators like musky, lake trout, steelhead, or salmon.

A modern baitcaster with a beautiful design! (I especially like the cork knobs)
