While the average size of blue catfish is between 25 and 40 inches and 5 and 30lb, these behemoths can reach a maximum size of 65 inches and 150lb. The biggest catfish ever caught is a giant of 143lb and 57 inches.
Unfortunately, not many anglers use landing nets when fishing for these fantastic fish, resulting in many big catfish being lost, usually only feet away from the boat or shore. Taking a net with you on the water is the best way to ensure you’ll land those trophy cats!
Catfish can be caught year-round but are most active in water temperatures between 60 and 80º F. They prefer hunting and feeding in low visibility conditions, so cloudy days with light to moderate southern or western winds can make for excellent catfishing.
The average size of channel catfish caught in America is between 20 and 30 inches and 2 and 10 pounds. It can reach a maximum size of about 50 inches and 60 pounds. A trophy-sized channel cat is a fish of 20 pounds or more.
While channel and blue catfish generally spawn sometime between late spring and mid-summer, flathead and bullhead catfish usually spawn between late spring and late summer. All catfish types tend to spawn in water temperatures between 70 and 80F.
