10 Helpful Pike Fishing Tips

As the northern pike can be a pretty intimidating and difficult species to catch, I decided to share my 10 most helpful pike fishing tips.

TIP 1 Most pike fishing can be done with a conventional spinning rod and if you are just starting out, that's exactly the type of rod you should get.

TIP 2 With that rod, get yourself a qualitative spinning reel with at least 3-4 steel ball bearings and you are good to go.

TIP 3 Use a strong enough mainline! Go with a 15-18lb test for monofilament or a 25-30lb test for braid.

TIP 4 Pike have sharp teeth, so make sure you use wire leaders of at least 25-30lb.

TIP 5 Alternatively, you can use really think fluorocarbon leaders.  But make sure to use FC leaders of at least 60 to 80lb!

TIP 6 Pike love ambush points. Try to target areas with a lot of cover and vegetation.

TIP 7 Northern pike are powerful fighters. Make sure to adjust your reel's drag system to avoid line breaks!

TIP 8 Pike are predators that love to eat fish.  Fishing with live baits during the warmer months of the year can be very effective.

TIP 9 During winter, using dead baits is often even more effective for pike.  The big ones love sardines!!!

TIP 10 Pike have very big mouths.  Make sure always to use 2 treble hooks!
