It is a superb rig for both dead and live baits and works at its best when fished in moving water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginners often find this predator rig somewhat difficult and intimidating, but it really is simplicity itself if you know how to set it up and what tackle to use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In order to show you just how easy it can be to rig the sunken float, I decided to write this illustrative step-by-step guide. It includes both simple explanations, images, and tackle recommendations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if you are interested in learning a new and very effective pike and zander rig, or if you want to improve your sunken float setup, this article is perfect for you! This second stop will simply act as a buffer bead between the float and the swivel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend using a <strong>medium float for smaller baitfish<\/strong>, and a <strong>large one for bigger baits<\/strong>. <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/asjFq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>You can find the perfect sunken float on Amazon here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always make sure that your float actually manages to elevate your bait when fishing with live baits, as it will otherwise manage to get to the bottom, which will impact your presentation somewhat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Connect Uptrace to Mainline <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-editorskit-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/strikeandcatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_1791-min.jpg\" alt=\"an image of a long uptrace for pike fishing\" class=\"wp-image-8146\"><\/noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/strikeandcatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_1791-min.jpg.webp\" alt=\"an image of a long uptrace for pike fishing\" class=\"wp-image-8146 lazyload\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/strikeandcatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_1791-min.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-3\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Step number two is putting on your uptrace. But before you can do that, you will have to actually make an uptrace first. Don&rsquo;t worry, it&rsquo;s a really simple and swift task! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Take about 25-35 inches of your uptrace material (<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/QuAYp\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">Check out my go-to uptrace material on Amazon here<\/a>)<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Put a size 2 or 4 barrel swivel on one end using a crimp (<a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/8h51r\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">Amazon has a really great crimp tool that you can check out here<\/a>)<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Done! You now have an open-ended uptrace (we will get to the other end in step 3). Now, you can simply tie your mainline to the uptrace&rsquo;s swivel, using the improved clinch knot (my favorite fishing knot). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Put the Two Big Eye Swivels onto Other End of Uptrace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-editorskit-rounded\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/strikeandcatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_1789-min.jpg\" alt=\"an image of two interconnected swivels for the sunken float rig\" class=\"wp-image-8147\"><\/noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" src=\"https:\/\/strikeandcatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_1789-min.jpg.webp\" alt=\"an image of two interconnected swivels for the sunken float rig\" class=\"wp-image-8147 lazyload\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/strikeandcatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/IMG_1789-min.jpg\" id=\"mv-trellis-img-4\" data-trellis-processed=\"1\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This next part is a really simple hack that erases the need of buying special helicopter swivels for sunken float setups. All You need is <strong>two big eye swivels<\/strong> that you then connect to one another. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/geni.us\/QFH1mH\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"You can find really strong big eye swivels on Amazon here (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">You can find really strong big eye swivels on Amazon here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you have to do is simply thread one swivel through the big eye of the second, creating a <strong>helicopter setup<\/strong> as one swivel will spin around the other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And in order for the spinning swivel not to slide up onto your uptrace, you should <strong>squeeze its eye together<\/strong> using pliers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, you can <strong>put the connected swivels onto the other end of your uptrace<\/strong>, again via the help of a crimp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your basic sunken float rig is now finished. Good job! Hence, a length of <strong>10-15 inches<\/strong> is totally enough. And thanks to uptrace, you don&rsquo;t have to worry about possible bite-offs either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also use an <strong>anti-tangle sleeve <\/strong>on my traces in order to prevent possible tangles even more and to get a nicer angle from my mainline and uptrace to my wire trace. The length of the monofilament line is determined by the depth you want your baitfish to be presented at. The further off bottom you want it to fish, the longer the lead line has to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how short or long it&rsquo;ll be, just make sure that it&rsquo;s always longer than your wire trace so that your baitfish will never be able to touch the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I normally set the length to <strong>20-30 inches<\/strong>, which means that my baitfish will be fished approximately <strong>5-15 inches off the bottom<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Pro Tip: <\/strong>Use a thinner diameter of 6-8lb for your lead-line, as this is the part of your rig that should break if you get snagged on the bottom. You&rsquo;ll lose your lead, but keep the rest of your rig!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The weight of your let is decided by both the size (and strength of your live bait) and\/or the current (if you are fishing rivers). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bigger and stronger the bait, and\/or the stronger the current, the heavier your lead will have to be in order to keep the entire rig in place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally, I will go for a <strong>1.5oz lead for smaller live baits and slower current<\/strong>s, and a <strong>2-2.5oz weight for big baitfish and\/or stronger currents<\/strong>. I use both bait variants all the time on this rig and both of them produce a lot of bites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, I usually avoid too big baits, as heavy baits can be really difficult to cast out far, and too large and strong live baits will usually just not stay where they&rsquo;re supposed to be for long, as they can manage to take off with the entire rig setup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, <strong>medium-sized baits of 5 to 10 inches<\/strong> are a very good choice for this rig. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where Can You Fish the Sunken Float Rig?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While you can fish the sunken float paternoster in both still and moving water, the ideal venue would be a slow to medium-flowing river, especially when it comes to dead baits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gentle current will move your dead bait and make it appear alive as it floats slowly up and down in the flowing water. It is here that the sunken float is absolutely deadly for pike and zander!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, when you are fishing with live baits, it doesn&rsquo;t really make much of a difference if you are targeting still or moving waters.
